Shadows

The Shadows, like the Vorlons are a very ancient race, one of the First Ones. They were rumored to be old even a First Ones, though by far not the oldest.

It cannot be said for sure what they look like, since they usually remain hidden from sight - they have the ability to phase out of sight (similar to their vessels phasing from and into hyperspace. When they are visible they apear as a remotely spider-like creature, but like the Vorlons, this might also only be an Encounter Suit of some sort.

They appear every now and then (a 1000 year sleep-kick butt-sleep cycle) and meddle with the affairs of the younger races trying to provoke war among them. The last time they awakened a 1000 years ago, but were defeated and drawn back by a coalition that consisted of the Minbari, several other unidentified races, some of the remaining First Ones and the Vorlons.

When they realized that they were loosing, they seeded their Vessels on 1000s of worlds, so that they couldn't all be found and destroyed. Several were even planted in the human's solar system.
